KHENTRUL RINPOCHE TO TEACH ON THE HEART SUTRA IN ARKANSAS

Khentrul Rinpoche

The Tibetan Buddhist teacher and scholar, Khentrul Lodro Thaye Rinpoche, will offer instruction and commentary on The Heart Sutra on January 7-8 from 10-12 a.m. and 2-5 p.m.  The teachings will be given at Katog Choling Rit’hrod Mountain Retreat Center near Parthenon, Arkansas.  For more information, visit their website or call 870-446-2952.  Email inquiries may be sent, as well, to katogmtnretreat@gmail.com.  Suggested donations for the weekend’s teachings range from $40-$65, but no one will be turned away, of course, for lack of funds.  All are welcome to this extraordinary event.

Born and educated in Tibet, Rinpoche has been widely recognized as one of the great scholars, teachers, and tulkus of the Tibetan tradition.  His instruction, counsel, and example continue to inspire and educate students and practitioners all over the world.  To have Rinpoche teaching on The Heart Sutra as the new year commences is indeed a great blessing.

The very short Buddhist scripture often referred to simply as The Heart Sutra represents one of the most revered texts in Mahayana Buddhism.  The Heart Sutra, most likely composed between 100 B.C.E. and 600 C.E., has been memorized, chanted, analyzed, commented on, and expounded upon around the world for two millennia.  It is a core text, and its meaning and significance for those who seek a fuller understanding of the Buddhist way of life are essential.  But because it is a text that addresses the challenging Buddhist doctrine of emptiness, it is also a text whose many layers of meaning are typically revealed through the skillful exposition of a qualified teacher. Rinpoche is, of course, just such a teacher, and those who are able to listen to his explanation of this central work will receive immeasurable benefit.

BIOGRAPHY

Holiness Ngawang Tenzin is a high reincarnation of the Drukpa Kagyu Lineage of Buddhism in Bhutan. He is regarded as one of the most revered teachers of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage in Bhutan. He is the reincarnation of Drubthop Chenpo Jinpa Gyeltshen Rinpoche who was alive in the 18th century. His Holiness started studying Buddhism and learning chanting at the age of five. By age of 16 he was able memorize all chants; he became a dance master; and knew how to construct all the sand mandalas. He went on to study Buddhist Philosophy at Tangu Monastery in Bhutan.  After completing his degree, he went to Nepal and India for further study. When he finished his studies in Nepal and India, he then returned to Tangu Retreat Center and completed a nine year retreat.

Before he went to retreat, His Holiness studied Mahamudra and Dzogchen with many great Tibetan Buddhist masters including the 68th HH Je Khenpo Tenzin Dendrup, and 69th HH Je Khenpo Geshe Gedun Rinchen Rinpoche. He also studied with and other great masters including HH Dudjom Rinpoche, HH Dilgo Kyhentse Rinpoche, HH Penlop Khen Rinpoche and Jadrel Rinpoche. At the age of 45, the Royal Government of Bhutan and the center monastic body chose him to become Tshenye Lopen and he was recognized as a philosophy master.  Five years later, he became His Holiness Dorji Lopen Rinpoche by appointment and oversaw the monasteries and monastic practice of the Drukpa Kagyu lineage in Bhutan.  His Holiness has retired from the post and resides at his temple in Bhutan.   At the present, His Holiness is caring for his monasteries and other projects, conducting large prayer ceremonies and meditating in his retreat center.

His Holiness Ngawang Tenzin is recognized as a great scholar and meditation master. His teachings are clear, concise and presented in a way that is understandable to the listener. Throughout his life, he has spent 28 years in retreat. His Holiness always radiates great peace, joy, love, compassion and tolerance and many who have met him have been very moved by these qualities that he exudes.

SPONSOR HIS HOLINESS

As you may know, supporting a Master of H.H.’s stature, done with the proper motivation, can generate immeasurable merit for sponsors and those connected to them.  There is a great need for people to step forward as financial sponsors for His Holiness’ care while he is in the United States for his final tour.  If you are able and feel moved to become a sponsor please contact Geshe Dorjee of the Tibetan Cultural Institute of Arkansas, 479-790-7950.

Pennies for Partnerships

The Tibetan Cultural Institute of Arkansas proudly introduces The Pennies for Partnership Tibetan Social Work outreach program, located in India. Our Director, Ms. Leann Halsey has been developing this outreach for us for several years and it has proved to be an enormously effective program in purchasing organic rice from Tibetan famers, and delivering that rice to the neediest families in various locations in India.  It is stunning example of living the spiritual path through the direct action in reducing the hunger/suffering of all sentient beings.

From the Director: Ms. Halsey,

Donate to Pennies for Partnerships

Many of you were a part of the initial Pennies for Partnerships project where you donated jars full of pennies, and aluminum cans for recycling in order to help generate funds for one of the very important initiatives of TCIA called Tutors for Tibetans (originally titled Tibetan Children’s Heritage Fund). The first ever PfP fundraiser generated the initial support to start a pilot program, which has now been in effect since 2008 and serves children in the Tibetan settlement of Mundgod. It is a tutoring project that is now expanding to another location within the same area. It is the hope of Professor Burris and Geshe Dorjee that some day the tutoring program will be made available to all children in the settlements.

We recognize the hard work of our director, Ms. Leann Halsey and the community of support she has built.  Please visit the Pennies for Partnership website for more recent information, and to donate to this TCIA project, locate the Donation Button for PfP on this page and support this ongoing project. Thank-you for your ongoing support.
